Swine flu scare:how scary is it?

I'm watching CNN now as I write this post. They're talking about this swine flu that is suspected to claim the lives of some 68 people in Mexico and is believed to have sickened some 1,000 more. The World Health Organization has expressed fear that the swine flu has the potential to be pandemic. Reports of suspected similar cases were also noted in New York, California and Texas. Could these cases really be related to each other in any way given the distance? Can these cases be contained?

Authorities advise people to be extra cautious by washing hands regularly, stay home if ill and seek immediate medical attention if having serious respiratory problems.

The least we can do now is to panic. Hope that the experts will find out the cause of this swine flu the soonest and be able to fight the disease fully before it becomes a global pandemic. As of this writing, no vaccine for this new strain of virus has been manufactured yet, according to the reports.

I don't wanna panic. God help us.

  1. i think it is possible despite the distance because of air travel, there were 4 people diagnosed with the swine flu here in san diego county, but thankfully, they were the mild case. i hope this will not spread further.

  2. I was watching the same news stories. I know there have been some cases in the U.S., but I believe they have been mild. Hopefully, they medical experts can stop it before it spreads to other countries further.

  3. It is scary, yes, but you are right panicking is not a good idea. If someone has been sick a week or more, with no improvement should seek a Dr. There is an antibiotic in the US that will kill this strain of virus. Be aware of anyone who has recently travelled to Mexico. Wash hands frequently, if someone is coughing or appears ill, stay at least 6 feet back from them. Most important I think, is to teach kids to wash hands, and steer clear of sick children. It can obviously spread very quickly.

  6. lots of money is being made. it's not something that is of imminent danger in the US, even if people catch it here (which they are) it's extremely treatable in this country-the big problem in Mexico City is their lack of supplies and overpopulation.

  7. This is indeed a serious case as a lot of people died because of this Swine flu. And yes, I am scared, hope that the media won't hype these things as they scare more people about the situation.
